This is a new book from Heyday and to be honest, I love it. Everything you ever wanted to know about nature after dark, with great pictures and snappy prose, all laid out in a fabulous design. One of the bats on the cover, Pallid Bat, was just made the “state bat” of California. Released November, 2023.
Timber Press book, January 2024, with 32 ways to experience nature in California, often right from your car. Destinations range from family-friendly cave hikes near the Oregon Border to the famous birding site, the Salton Sea, in Imperial County.
This is a poetry book done in a hand-sewn, hand-printed edition of 20, with encaustic covers by Christine Mugnolo. Released in Dec 2023, it is now sold out.
A field guide to Western herps and an introduction to snakes and lizards and amphibians overall, written in an accessible, fast style. Dr. Martinez-Fonseca has previously written a book on snakes of Central America, and Dr. Westeen is a lizard expert from UC Berkeley. It was so fun to get to be in the field with them.
Would Jane Goodall steer you wrong? If she likes this book, you will too. It starts with an overview of ecology (see the geology sample here in this website), goes to a field guide section illustrated by the inimitable John Muir Laws, and ends with sample hikes, all of which are suitable for beginners or experts alike.
A collection of fourteen quirky essays, each with a facing page photograph.

I have an essay in Michael Light’s ASTOUNDING book (so good!), Lake Bonneville / Lake Lahontan, available from Radius Books.
A poetry collection from U of Wisconsin press.
Lyrical prose and magic realism as two art curators go to Siberia to fulfill a love affair and poach mammoth tusks. The story has two strands, top of page and bottom, to reveal each character’s version of what’s happening, plus also is told by Christine Mugnolo’s art plates.
The back cover of Mouth, with an example of Christine Mugnolo’s fabulous art.
Polar poetry from Ohio U Press, via my NSF residency in Antarctica. Themes include history, aviation, and the experience of experience. That’s an LC-130 on the cover, unloading supplies at a research camp on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. The hose siphons off excess fuel, to top off the camp’s reserve tanks.
